Stork Reality is a striking piece that delves into the ongoing debate over bird hunting in Malta, a tradition that divides the nation. Created in response to the tragic events of 2018, when five protected storks were shot down, this artwork sheds light on the ethical concerns surrounding hunting practices and their impact on Malta’s endangered species. Growing up in rural Dingli, the artist formed a deep connection with the island’s natural environment, where the annual sounds of gunfire serve as a painful reminder of the destruction caused to wildlife. Despite hunters being part of the RAFiott’s community growing up, the artist firmly rejects their “delizzju” [“hobby”] as an ethical practice, particularly when it targets protected birds.
Stork Reality captures the tension between hunters, regular citizens, and conservationists, all of whom play a role in the future of Malta’s wildlife. By shifting focus to preserving the island’s fragile environment, these groups could find common ground and work together. The future of Malta’s avian population depends on cooperation, not conflict. If the birds disappear, both sides lose the very reason for their dispute.
Incorporating tberfil, a traditional Maltese signwriting technique, the piece also pays homage to local cultural heritage. “Stork Reality” represents a pivotal moment in RAFiott’s stylistic evolution, and is available in two versions in the RAFiott Shop.
