True to form, “Id-Di u D-Do” by Ramon Azzopardi Fiott [RAFiott] is presented as a diptych [part 1 & part 2], representing the inseparable nature of a cherished duo. Derived from the Maltese expression “qishom [They’re like] id-Di u d-Do”, this limited edition fine artwork delves into the timeless concept of companionship.

Unveiling the Symbolism of Dee and Don: Nostalgia and Contemporary Realities

The historical origins of this expression can be traced back to the 1870s when two gunboats, HMS Dee and HMS Don, were built within a mere 10 days of each other. Serving alongside each other and eventually finding themselves moored side by side, they became immortalized in the Maltese language.

Maltese townhouses were often constructed in pairs, showcasing a distinctive architectural trend, a tradition which can still be observed today in the older streets of the island. Furthermore, it is customary for Maltese houses to be given names. In this particular case, although unmarked, they are referred to as Dee and Don – a couple deeply in love, intertwined and enamoured with each other. Regrettably, they now stand amid a sea of mundane apartment buildings, a common sight in today’s streetscapes.

Underneath the artist’s digital brushstrokes, the sweetness of the image captures the cosy atmosphere of traditional homes while simultaneously shedding light on the gradual decay of aesthetic beauty within public spaces on the island.

Exhibited at the prestigious Maltese National Fine Arts Gallery – MUÅ»A, Valletta, “Id-Di u D-Do 1” exemplifies the artist’s passion for the topic. Through this piece, Fiott invites viewers to reflect upon the enduring bonds of companionship and the changing visual dynamics of Malta’s public spaces. The artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving the aesthetic charm that once defined our streetscapes.
