EuroPRIDE 2023 saw Malta transform into a vibrant hub for LGBTQIA+ celebration and advocacy, as the island embraced its role as a beacon of inclusivity and progress. Amidst this historic event, ARC [Allied Rainbow Communities] commissioned a series of t-shirt designs to reflect the significance of the Pride flag’s colours, leading to the creation of the RAFiott X ARC collaboration. The “Pride RED [T-Shirt] | RAFiott X ARC” design is a highlight of this collaboration, capturing the essence of the red stripe on the Pride flag, which symbolises LIFE.

This collaboration was inspired by the success of the MeliTENSION Exhibition, which the artist held just over a year prior. Designed by Gilbert Baker, the rainbow flag has represented the queer community since the 1970s, gaining prominence particularly after the assassination of Harvey Milk. The six-colour Pride flag we use today is a modification of the original, which also featured hot pink. Despite the change, the remaining colours have retained their original meanings.

This artwork makes reference to various cultural icons — Malta’s traditional buses that once dominated its streets, the Renaissance dolphin; a recurrent motif in Maltese heritage, and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; a nod to the queer cinematic classic. Inspired by RAFiott’s “Tal-Linja | Deluxe Fine Art Print,” the design also features “tberfil,” a traditional Maltese form of signwriting that embodies intricate craftsmanship—in this design, it’s used to denote the bus’ name, “Priscilla.”
