Science in the City Festival 2023 | Festival Illustration
At the heart of the RAFiott X Science in the City Collaboration is a striking bespoke illustration that symbolises the festival’s core themes and engages a scientifically curious youth demographic.
At surface value, the aesthetic RAFiott adopted for this project is fun, vivid, and child-friendly; it is also thought-through – the CMYK colour scheme and pop-art aesthetic are relevant to the hero theme; they also allude to a prime example of the power of art and science combined: the printing press. Revolutionising how knowledge is shared and reshaping human connection.
As for the subject matter, the illustration features a three-faced human head – a reference to the Greek god of magic Hecate – traditionally depicted with three heads. Each face represents one of the festival’s Changemaker pillars:
- Artists
- Researchers
- Community Members.
Author Arthur C. Clarke famously says, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Arguably technology is also a fusion of science and art or design. Ergo, technology and magic could fall under the same deity’s purview. Hecate, therefore would be the god of technology – representing the transformative power of art and science.
Within the 3 visible eyes are symbols for topics that will be touched upon at the festival’s many events, including sustainable fashion, music, and local flora. Crowning the image is a mushroom cloud raining binary code – representing children’s boundless potential for creativity and innovation.
